Iowa is moving forward with an online voter registration system.
Tuesday, the Iowa Voter Registration Commission voted to adopt a rule that allows legal voters with a drivers license or state ID to register through the internet. 93% of voters fall under these criteria.
"Voter participation starts with increased access to voter registration. This rule is the first step in making it easier for more Iowans to participate in the election and voter registration system," said Secretary of State Pate.
The new system will roll out by early 2016.
"This is a significant step. We had a productive meeting with the DOT and are confident we can be up and going before the 2016 election," Pate said. "We'll continue to work further on the issue to expand voter registration to other groups for on-line access."
The system will be hosted both of the Secretary of State and the Department of Transportation's websites.
