Grassley: Ernst "right person" to give Republican response to State of the Union

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Tuesday's State of the Union will see an Iowan give the Republican response after President Obama's speech.

Newly sworn-in U.S. Senator Joni Ernst will get a platform on a national stage.

She found out she'd give the rebuttal December 9, then kept it quiet until it was announced last week.

The president spent the weekend tweaking his speech.

Topics he'll focus on are expected to include building on the economic recovery and cutting the price of a college education.

We talked with Iowa's senior Senator Chuck Grassley Monday.

He thinks Senator Ernst is the right person to give the Republican response.

"I think selecting her was a very good thing because she is very careful with what she says and I think she has great credibility with her voice and the stand she's taken," said Sen. Grassley.

Grassley says he thinks having a divided government may result in more compromise and more laws being enacted due to a bi-partisan approach - though the president, of course, has veto power.
