Study: Salt intake doesn't impact mortality rates

A new study from researchers at Emory University suggests that salty foods aren't as bad for people as originally thought.

The research team studied the salt intake noted in a food questionnaire that more than 2,500 adults took a decade ago.

Through the study, they found that there is no link between how much salt participants said they ate and their rates of heart disease or overall mortality.

Experts say that this doesn't mean you should start eating more salt, though; they say it's tough to get an accurate reading on dietary sodium based on the results from just one questionnaire.

Adults over 50 are supposed to consume less than 1,500 milligrams of salt a day, according to national guidelines.
