IOWA CITY (KWWL) - More than 500 Iowa City students danced for hours to support those battling cancer.

Iowa City's West High School students held their third 3rd annual Mini Dance Marathon.

Students from all grades took part in the five hour event.

The student-run event works closely with the University of Iowa Children's Hospital to raise money for the hospital and children battling cancer.

Families shared their experiences at the event.

"Battling for his life every single day, trying to find things in life to keep him moving forward each day," said Craig Schroeder, who's son is battling cancer.

This year, the group was especially motivated by the story of Schroeder's son, Austin “Flash” Schroeder.

Austin would have started his freshman year at West High this past August if not for the treatment of his recent diagnosis.

"An organization like this, a group like this with Jen and all these kids that come together will really put a smile on peoples faces," said Schroeder.

This year's event raised $67,837, which will all go to the final total of the University of Iowa's Dance Marathon total.
