MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) -- More than 300 people came out this weekend to say goodbye to a northern Iowa elementary school that is scheduled to be demolished this year.

The Mason City Globe-Gazette reports the Mason City district held an open house Saturday for the former Madison School.

Twenty-five-year-old Lorra Sappenfield of Mason City got emotional as she walked through the 91-year-old building because she says the teachers there changed her life and made her feel important.

Assistant superintendent Hal Minear estimated that between 300 and 400 people attended. Among them was an 84-year-old man from Fort Dodge who wanted to visit the school on more time.
