CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

College students in Cedar Rapids are helping build homes for Habitat for Humanity.

Saturday, dozens of Mount Mercy University students spent the day painting the walls in one of their two build sights in partnership with the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity.

"A year long habitat for humanity partnership," said Laurie Hamen, Mount Mercy University President. "We've funded a portion of the youth house and we are going to volunteer throughout the year on this house and two other houses, the Youth United for 2015 and the Pope Francis house.

Students and Mount Mercy staff will have their "habitat Saturdays" once a month.

President Hamen says it's more than just celebrating her fall inauguration, it's about connecting academic excellence with compassion and service.
