DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Freshman politician Rep. Rod Blum has barely started his first term in office, and already has an opponent challenging him for his seat in 2016.

Cedar Rapids business owner and City Council Member Monica Vernon announced today via her Facebook page that she'll be challenging Blum for his seat in the next election.

"Iowa's 1st District deserves a representative in Congress with a track record of solving problems and getting results for families and small businesses across our community," she said in her Facebook post. "That's why I'm excited to announce I'm running for Congress. I'm proud of my work growing a small business, helping local communities recover from a devastating flood and working to create jobs, increase access to affordable housing and improve education for students in our district."

Vernon ran for the same seat in the most recent elections, but didn't make it out of the five-person Democratic primary.  Pat Murphy won the party's nomination, but lost to Blum in the election.

Vernon also launched her campaign website today: http://monicavernonforcongress.com/
