The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says an explosion at Schneider Electric happened when employees were testing new equipment.

Something malfunctioned while employees tested a new transformer. It's unclear what caused the malfunction.

The explosion also caused a fire and smoke spread to much of the building.

No one was injured.

PREVIOUS STORY:

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is investigating an explosion at Schneider Electric on 6th Street Southwest.

The explosion happened around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Employees were inside the building at the time, but have since been evacuated. No one was injured.

Firefighters are still inspecting the area before letting anyone back into the building.

The cause is still not clear at this time.
