Facebook to post AMBER alerts for missing children

Posted: Updated:
Facebook users can expect to see AMBER alerts as part of a new partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The announcement comes today on National Amber Alert Awareness Day. Facebook will post AMBER alerts to news feeds in a targeted area when a child has been abducted. The National Center will then issue an alert.

Facebook says the alerts will contain a photo and a link to the missing child's poster that they can share with friends.

The company says for years users have used the social platform to share details on missing children.

"Protecting the well being of our young people is a responsibility that falls to every American," said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. "Each of us can help by paying close attention to alerts that come in and to make sure that you are plugged in to the Amber Alert Network via social media."

Facebook says in many cases users have shared information that led to the safe return of an abducted child.

Since 1996, the AMBER alert system has recovered over 700 children.
