IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The bone-chilling cold and slightly warmer temperatures over the weekend made for perfect ice-forming conditions at Iowa City's two public ice skating areas.

City Park Pond and the Terry Trublood Recreation Area lake are perfect for ice skating and are not open to the public.

The City Park pond has been used for more than 50 years by figure skaters and hockey players

The pond is about a 3/4-acre and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. for skating, as long as the ice is solid enough for use.

There is a larger pond located in City Park near Shelter 8, but skating is never allowed on this pond due to safety concerns. A freezing pattern on this pond creates dangerous air pockets and unstable conditions that could result in skaters falling through the ice.

In the Trueblood Recreation area, not only can people now skate on the lake, but they can rent skates.

The H2O equipment rental facility, owned and operated by Fin & Feather, rents ice skates in all sizes.

For additional information on the City's outdoor skating areas, contact the Parks Office at 319-356-5107.
