Manchester Snowmobile Club ready to help during winter months

MANCHESTER (KWWL) -

Most days, snowmobiling is a leisure activity.

But for the members of the Snow Pioneers Snowmobile Club in Manchester, some days, it can be a life-saver.

They've formed a tight relationship with the Manchester Police Department, and during nasty weather, are standing by to help if there are accidents that can't be reached by normal cars.

"It's a huge asset," Brad Comer said.  He's an officer with the Manchester Police and secretary of the snowmobile club. "With limited funding, we can't obviously own snowmobiles. So it's great to have the public's assistance with any emergencies that we would ever have."

These riders normally go out in nice weather, but when called upon, it's usually during the worst.

"The severe conditions are above and beyond," Steve Vorwald, president of the Snow Pioneers said.  "When it's blowing like that, it's hard to see, just like anything else. But if they call us out, we'll go."

Although the conditions may be tough, he said it feels good to help somebody.

They usually get only a handful of calls each year, and so far this year, they've had none.  But that doesn't mean they aren't ready.

When the forecast calls for snow, Vorwald said they coordinate with club members and the police department to make sure they have members standing by, just in case.
