Iowa Workforce Development director suddenly retires

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

The director of Iowa Workforce Development retired suddenly.

According to a statement from Governor Terry Branstad's office, Teresa Wahlert told Governor Branstad late Friday she would retire.

It took effect Sunday.

She's been on the job since 2011.

She had come under fire from state legislators for allegedly tilting unemployment rulings toward business and exerting influence over judges who decide unemployment benefits cases.

She also pared down the agency, including shuttering 36 unemployment offices, and helped institute the "Skilled Iowa" training program to help unemployed and underemployed workers.

Branstad named Iowa Civil Rights Commission director Beth Townsend to take over the job on an interim basis.
