New wheelchairs put to use in Waterloo basketball game

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - The Iowa Chairiots wheelchair basketball team through SportAbility of Iowa took the court Saturday night against the Cedar Falls AMVETS Riders.

The Chairiots had their wheelchairs and the trailer they were in stolen back in Dec. 2013.

With donations, they were able to buy new ones in April and they are now able to take the court at events like this one all over Eastern Iowa.

"It really gives them an opportunity," Jack Eherenman, CEO of SportAbility said. "Rather than be on the sidelines and watch people run up and down the court, or play tennis or whatever, it gives them the chance to really experience that at a different level, in a different atmosphere and it teaches them that they actually can be an athlete." AMVETS' general fund.

The money raise from Saturday's game will go towards a new wheelchair for the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown and to the AMVETS' general fund.
