IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An Iowa State student found dead in Iowa City died of asphyxia, according to authorities.

Tong Shao, 20, was found in the trunk of a car registered to her boyfriend, Xiangnan Li. Police believe he returned to China soon after her death. So far, they have been unable to question him.

According to the office of the Johnson County Medical Examiner, Shao's cause of death is listed as ‘asphyxia,' which can be caused by strangulation or suffocation. Her death has been classified as a homicide.

Recently unsealed search warrants show investigators believe Li may have thought Shao was cheating on him prior to her death and his disappearance.
