WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Cedar Valley area's hospitals say they are limiting visitors due to a rise in flu cases.

UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, and Mercy Hospital in Oelwein are limiting visitors in patient care areas.

A hospital spokesman say children under 14 should not visit patient care units in an effort to protect patients, their families, and health care workers.

In a news release, Dr. James Lehman, vice president of medical affairs for Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare stated, "The safety of patients, families and associates is a top priority. It's a hard decision to make when it affects family members who want to visit their loved one, but it is a necessary, yet temporary, action."

In a statement, Dr. Tim Horrigan, chief medical officer at Allen Hospital stated, "These guidelines are temporary, and in effect until the community flu cases decrease. Visitors are an important part of the healing process, but we must reduce the risk of exposing more patients, or their visitors, to the flu virus."
