WATERLOO (KWWL) - The JCPenney store in the Crossroads Shopping Center in Waterloo will be closing its doors in the near future.  The company says it one of about 40 stores that will be shutting down.

Most locations are set to close on or around April 4, 2015.  According to corporate affairs, the decision to close the stores is being made after analyzing store performance both in the present and for the future.

The store leader at the Waterloo location, Ryan Peck, said 83 employees will be affected by the store closing.  Peck also said it's a tough situation, but they are doing everything they can to help employees, including benefits packages, relocation to another store, and other help to support them.

Peck first heard the news of his location closing at the beginning of this week.

In a statement, senior manager of media relations and corporate affairs, Kate Coultas, said, "Most locations will close on or about April 4, 2015.  After the announced closures take place, JCPenney will have approximately 1,020 locations across 49 states and Puerto Rico.  While it's never an easy decision to close stores, especially due to the impact on our valued associates and customers, this was made after a careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company."

JCPenney will also close stores at the Southbridge Mall in Mason City and at the Westland Mall in West Burlington.
