Furnace checks important in cold temps

Posted: Updated:

How busy does Russ Schellhorn get in the winter?

"We get extremely busy...extremely busy."

Schellhorn works for a heating and cooling company.

"When the temperature plummets like this, if you don't have a furnace that's been maintained, chances are somethings going to happen and that's usually when we get a call."

He calls it a win-win for everyone, because servicing furnaces during the off hours gets pricey.

Older furnaces have their own problems, like getting rust or cracks.

Schellhorn says they're fine, but high efficiency furnaces can save you money over time.

"With utility incentives for rebates and stuff, one can save a lot of money by putting high efficiency furnaces in."

But the best thing a homeowner can do? Simple, change the filter.

"As long as they match up the size and make sure its matched up correctly, that's the best thing they can do, that'll save them the longevity on that furnace."

Changing the filter will not only keep your filter in good shape, but it will also keep you safe and healthy.
