DYERSVILLE (AP) - The Dyersville City Council has approved the purchase of body cameras for its police department.

The council voted Monday to buy six body cameras and four in-car cameras at a cost of nearly $42,000, the Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports.

Mayor Alvin Haas says he supports the purchase because the technology offers visual evidence when complaints against officers are being investigated and during criminal proceedings.

He says the eastern Iowa city will use a recently awarded $4,500 grant to help pay some of the cost. The rest will come from the city's general fund.

Many other police departments across the nation are purchasing the devices following the August death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
