Ernst on the verge of historic moment in Iowa politics

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

Washington, D.C. is about to become the new home away from home for a crop of freshman lawmakers, including Senator-elect Joni Ernst.

The Republican from Red Oak was instrumental in the GOP's big night in November, retaking control of the Senate. She becomes the first woman elected to Congress from Iowa and will be the first female combat veteran to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Ernst was a virtual unknown up until about a year ago. It just shows how quickly things can change in politics. NBC News has named her one of six members of Congress to watch in 2015.

After running a strong, successful campaign, the anticipation is building for her debut in the Senate.

Before that happens, she must be sworn in as Iowa's newest senator. That will happen in Washington on Tuesday. KWWL will be there for that event and will also have a one-on-one interview with her as she prepares for that historic moment. Look for that interview as KWWL's coverage of Iowa's New Era continues on Monday night.
