IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Some street crews say the winter storm system that hit eastern Iowa this weekend left behind  bitterly cold temperatures and bone chilling winds that could be a problem in clearing the roads.

"Salt is effective until about 15 degrees," said Jon Resler, Iowa City Public Works streets superintendent. "Every storm's unique, but with temps dropping we really need to get that snow off the roadways or it will freeze or stay frozen."

Blowing snow and bitterly cold wind chills are expected, so his 12-member crew is making sure snow is off the roads and stays off.

However, Resler says if they can't keep up with the conditions fast enough, they've got a little trick.

"We also mix our salt with a beet juice it actually helps reduce that temperature we can melt snow at," said Resler.

He says it actually helps stick to the roadways better, because typically salt scatters once it hits the streets.

"But temperatures are really going to drop and if we can't get that material off it's probably going to freeze and stay frozen for a while because the rest of this week doesn't look very good either," said Resler.
