2 Iowa children dead after showing flu-like symptoms

At least two Iowans under age 18 died from influenza in the past week.

Fourteen-year-old Amber Gray of Redfield and three-year-old Ayzlee McCarthy of Elk Horn both died this week after showing flu-like symptoms.

In addition, the Iowa Department of Public Health tells WHO-TV it is working to confirm three primary reports of flu deaths of people under age 18.

The families affected by the virus say the illness progressed fast.

Gray complained of flu-like symptoms on Dec. 21 and was taken to the hospital the next day. She was put on a ventilator, but days later died of pneumonia and sepsis.

In a similar situation, McCarthy's family says the three-year-old Ayzlee was perfectly healthy last week. Then Saturday morning she came down with a fever and complained about her legs hurting.

A clinic diagnosed Ayzlee with influenza A and B. The next day she was taken to the emergency room and eventually transferred to Blank Children's Hospital, where she died hours later.
