The City of Dubuque is considering a plan to prepare for an infestation of the tree-eating beetle emerald ash borer (EAB).

EAB has now been detected in 18 Iowa counties and in nearby Jo Daviess County, Ill. While the bugs have not been found in Dubuque yet, city leaders are developing plans to deal with the inevitable.

At a Dubuque City Council meeting on Jan. 5, the Council will consider adopting a plan developed by Park Division Manager Steve Fehsal and City Forester Steve Pregler. The 23-page readiness plan includes prevention, detection, communication and management activities to minimize the effects on Dubuque's tree population.

Dubuque's Park and Recreation Commission reviewed the EAB Readiness Plan at their December meeting and unanimously recommended its approval.
