For a time Thursday night, it had the look of a potential blowout for the UNI Panthers. The Evansville Purple Aces had other ideas at the Ford Center.

The Panthers bolted to a 16-point first half lead and led at half by 10. But, Evansville rallied to upset the 23rd ranked Panthers, 52-49, in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Evansville outscored the Panthers 32-19 in the second half, led by leading scorer, D.J. Balentine, who averages 22-points a game.

Jeremy Morgan held Balentine to just 4, first-half points, but Balentine got hot in the second half and led the Aces with 17.

Evansville's big man, Egidius Mockevicius, finished with 12-points and 13-rebounds, and picked up his 9th double-double of the young season.

Seth Tuttle led the Panthers with 18, before fouling out late in the game.

The upset loss drops UNI to 11-2 on the season, while Evansville improves to 11-2.

UNI plays host to Loyola Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the McLeod Center.
