New Years baby born in Waterloo

Posted: Updated:

A Cedar Rapids couple welcomed the Waterloo area's first birth of the new year today.

Cooper Steven Kleene was born at 12:52 p.m. at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. He weighs 9 pounds 8 ounces.

His parents, Calla and Tyler, said the birth was projected for Christmas, but Cooper was a hold-out.

They made the drive to Waterloo because Calla knew the doctor.

Cooper is their second child, following big-sister Porter. Now, both children have unique birthdays.

"I think it's cool, because our firstborn was born on Leap Day," Calla Kleene said. "But every year the kid's going to get a party on their birthday."

Porter was born Feb. 29, 2012.

The Kleenes said everything went smoothly. They received a gift basket from the nurses, as well as a baby blanket from an anonymous donor, which was earmarked for the first birth of year.

Another couple in Dubuque welcomed a baby girl at 12:42 a.m., likely the first new Eastern Iowan.
