McDonalds manager goes above and beyond to help homeless man

DYERSVILLE (KWWL) - A McDonald's manager helped a homeless man in need on New Years Eve.

It was a busier than normal New Years Eve at the McDonald's in Dyersville when Tom Ward walked into the restaurant.

Ward was looking for a place to stay.  While a Dyersville police officer was busy arranging that for him, manager Joe Mausser asked Ward if he had eaten anything.

"He had a small coffee and said he'd eaten a small sandwich," Mausser said. "So I told him he could order anything he wanted.  He picked a small sandwich and fries."

But Mausser thought the Ward could use a little more.

"He had a surprise waiting for him in the bag. He had more than just one sandwich. He had a large fries and a couple more sandwiches. And we made sure he had something nice and hot to drink. And in the process, I took it upon myself to get him a gift card and gave him what was in my pocket," he said.

"They just started giving me a bunch of food," Ward said.  "It was awesome."

Ward said he's in Iowa looking for work, and he said he's appreciated all the kindness from Iowans.

Mausser said it was no big deal.

"There's no glory for me," he said.  "I saw someone in need, and I thought, he could use it more than I could."

Ward said he plans on heading west.

"I want to get to San Francisco to find work," he said.  "At least get to a warmer state."

And thanks to the kindness of strangers, he'll be able to do part of it on a full stomach.
