Community helps family after fatal hunting accident

TAMA COUNTY (KWWL) - A 12-year-old girl is dead after a hunting accident near Traer.

Liesel Casto and two of her family members were getting ready to hunt for deer with muzzle loaders when her gun fired while she was loading it.

It happened Saturday morning in the two thousand block of Ridge Road near Traer.

North Tama Schools superintendent Bob Cue heard the news that morning.

"You know it's, it's a horrible thing," says Cue.

Cue says Casto went to North Tama Schools from kindergarten until transferring to Green Mountain-Garwin (GMG) schools during this school year. For years she was active in her community.

"Very outgoing, very strong willed, good kid, liked by many," said Cue.

That's why although on winter break, students and staff came together Monday to help those who are grieving.

Superintendent Cue says that's the role the school should play, helping students and staff during this tough situation.

"It's providing support, visiting with the family. You have to provide support for some of our staff members that are hurting as well as the students," said Cue.

This death is the first hunting fatality reported in Iowa during the 2014 season.
