BUCHANAN COUNTY (KWWL) - According to the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, Darren Ackerman, 32, of La Porte City has been arrested and charged after stealing a vehicle.

Around 11:30 a.m. Friday, the Sheriff's Office received a report from the Speede Shop convenience store in Winthrop of a male acting suspiciously at the store. Personnel were able to give authorities the license plate number, which matched a reportedly stolen vehicle out of Black Hawk County.

When deputies arrived at the convenience store, the man was gone. Deputies later saw Ackerman driving the vehicle in Winthrop, driving through the Wieland Lumber lot and heading south across an empty cornfield trying to reach Highway 20.

The vehicle became stuck and disabled after entering the ditch before Highway 20. Ackerman was later located in Independence and arrested.

He faces a first degree theft charge for the vehicle, a Class C Felony.

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office is still investigating. Further charges are pending
