DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

People in Dubuque rallied in support of police today.  The rally stood in stark contrast to the ones grabbing headlines lately.

"This is not a protest, or really even meant to be a rally or anything like that. We want it to be positive," said Jeff Stiles, the organizer of the event.

"I want to show a different side in what we've been seeing, and all the hatred we've been seeing toward police. This is something to show our appreciation to people that are risking their lives everyday," he said.

More than 100 people showed up to show their support.

Carol Dunlap brought her two grandchildren to the rally.

"It's something they need to learn: the respect, of what our officers do to protect us," she said.

Rick Hanten was one of many retired police officers that were also at the rally.  He said there can be a disconnect between police and the people they protect and serve.

"There's also an attitude that it's us against them, and that prevails in a lot of communities. But that's one thing that I think it needs to get into...we're here to protect them," he said.

Dubuque police didn't participate in the rally, although they were invited, Stiles said.

He's planning another rally in May, and he said police will participate in that one.
