Maquoketa council OKs rifle purchase plan for officers

Posted: Updated:
MAQUOKETA (AP) - The City Council has approved a draft purchase and financing agreement that would let Maquoketa buy rifles for its police officers, who would repay the city over 36 pay periods.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that the draft still needs review and approval by the city attorney.

Police Chief Brad Koranda took the loan idea to the City Council in September, saying the department's rifles are old and that newer rifles would give his officers a better peace of mind while on patrol. He also said having officers buy the rifles through a loan program makes the best use of the department's budget.

Under the draft agreement, an officer who leaves the force before the rifle is paid off must pay the remaining amount in full.
