WATERLOO (KWWL) -
Following the fatal shooting Christmas Eve in Waterloo, neighbors didn't expect to wake up to crime scene tape Christmas morning.
Police say Randy Dawson, 52, died in his home Wednesday night, located at 302 E 10th St. in Waterloo. Police are treating it as a criminal case at this point, and say they're talking to witnesses. Police also say they have persons of interest.
Neighbors say waking up to such a scene is hard any day, but it's especially hard on a holiday.
"It's just kind of looming overhead pretty much, right now we're just trying to tune it out," J.T. Smith said.
Smith lives two houses down from the scene with his five-year-old son. He said he was still in awe of what took place so close to his home.
"This is a holiday specifically for the kids, the kids should not have to deal with this, especially this time of year."
Other neighbors in the area say they were worried about loved ones coming over for Christmas, considering what happened the night before.
"We're going to go over to my mom's house for Christmas, that's better than being around here in this neighborhood," Chris Roby said.
Families said they hoped to go about the day as planned, and hope next year doesn't bring another tragedy.
According to Waterloo Police, an autopsy for Dawson is scheduled for Friday morning.
Leslie Hospitality owner Edwin Leslie says he doesn't have anything to hide, and to prove it he invited the public to view all of the documents, emails, agreements, and financial statements related to the deal at a public meeting this morning.
