Holiday stress? Two words: Parking lots

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - Many eastern Iowans rushed to grocery stores Christmas Eve, searching for last-minute items as they prepare holiday meals.

While some might say the holidays are a time to be merry, others would say they bring a sense of seasonal stress; one source of that stress - crowded parking lots.

"I would rather be at work, this is terrible," one shopper said in a Hy-Vee parking lot in Cedar Falls. Others expressed frustration, as they observed long lines of traffic and no empty parking spots in sight.

Shoppers said they were looking for the last few items on their lists Thursday afternoon, things like green beans, pies and spices for their signature holiday recipes.

Amidst the seasonal stress, a theme from shoppers was a wish for more time; more time for both grocery shopping and Christmas shopping in general. Many said they are aiming to begin their shopping much earlier next year, in the hopes of avoiding what many call, the stress that comes with the holidays.

Several chain grocery stores, including Hy-Vee, closed early Christmas Eve and will be closed Christmas Day.
