IOWA CITY (KWWL) - All David and Colleen Kane wanted for Christmas this year was for the whole family to get together, something which almost didn't happen.

"It's just such a blessing that he's here," said Colleen.

Two weeks ago, David had a stroke.

"I thought my life was ended," said Colleen. "Because he couldn't speak and the paralysis and I thought well this is it. We're seniors now and I guess I'll just be taking care of him."

Now, he can walk and talk just as well as before.

"I feel so normal now that I couldn't even picture myself having a stroke," said David.

David was checking out at an Iowa City Fareway and struggling to pay.

"Once he got to about this point right here, was really having a hard time walking," said Todd Long, Fareway Store Manager. "Hard time breathing, just a hard time functioning."

Employees at the store called 9-1-1 right away.

A quick reaction can make all the difference. there's a medicine that doctors can give stroke victims. However, they have a tight time frame where delivering the medicine is safe -- less than 5 hours. In Mr. Kane's case, he was able to get that medicine in about one hour.

Then, doctors were able to do a procedure about three hours after the stroke started.

"He was able to restore the blood flow to the brain completely," said Dr. Nadakumar Nagaraja, of the Neurology Department and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. "When I saw him after the procedure around six o'clock he was able to move his right arm and leg."

With the presents under the tree, family already starting to gather, the Kanes can now get their one Christmas wish.
