Eastern Iowa officers react to news of fallen officers in NYC and Florida

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - Two police officers in New York and one in Florida have been shot and killed this weekend.

In New York, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot to death inside their patrol car Saturday. The suspect later killed himself, investigators believe he killed them in retaliation for the death of Eric Garner.

Sunday morning, Officer Charles Kondek was shot and killed near Tampa, Florida. No word yet on what led to the shooting there.

This situation is something Cedar Falls Police Officer Javier Mercado hopes his family never has to go through.

"Every day before I say goodbye to them definitely a hug and a kiss and I love you and then you go to work and you do your job. You keep your head on a swivel and you do the best that you can do," said Mercado.

Officer Mercado has been in law enforcement for four years. He understands the dangers, but is still frustrated and saddened to hear when officers are killed in the line of duty.

"It's terrible, unfortunately that there's people out there that are just targeting people because of their uniform that they wear," said Mercado.

He says every day is different and every call they head to is different. That's why they need to always be alert.

"There's something's that just aren't in your control. You don't know when you walk up on a car what you're walking up into. They know what's walking up to them, but you don't necessarily know what you're walking up to. Any kind of call that we respond to we have a limited amount of information," said Mercado.
