CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Cedar Rapids firefighters are delivering gifts and testing smoke alarms Saturday as part of the "Be a Santa to a Senior" program.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is partnering with Home Instead Senior Care, a senior citizen home care service.

Firefighters have 53 gifts to help deliver this year. Last year, 72 households participated in the program that included the installation of 11 new smoke alarms and 31 replacement batteries for existing smoke alarms.

Along with delivering gifts, firefighters work to make homes safer by ensuring there are working smoke alarms on every level of the home and near sleeping areas.

Cedar Rapids Fire says gifts were delivered to 800 seniors in Linn County last year as part of the "Be a Santa to a Senior" program.
