Construction of whitewater park well underway

MANCHESTER (KWWL) -

It may be December, and there may be frigid temperatures outside, but that doesn't matter to the people building a whitewater rafting park in Manchester.

"Historical data shows that this is when the water is the lowest," said Ty Graham, site representative for Recreational Engineering and Planning out of Boulder, Colorado. "It's easier to control this time of year."

Manchester's park will be the third like it in Iowa, joining Charles City and Elkader as the other two. But Graham said this will be one of the best in the country.

"This is going to be a park that's unlike anything in the Midwest," he said.  "This is going to be one of the best parks in the nation."

The project broke ground in September, and Graham hopes to have it finished by February. It'll open to the public in May.

Graham said this park will attract people from not only all over Iowa, but from the surrounding states as well. And he said that will be good for business.

Shelly Schrader owns Olive That Deli, a sandwich shop across the street from the park. She said she's hoping the park will bring a boom in business not only to her, but to all of Manchester as well.

"We're hoping the park will bring more industry to Manchester," she said.
