Marshalltown police involved in shooting, crash just hours apart

Posted: Updated:
MARSHALLTOWN (KWWL) - Two police officers responding to a medical call crashed into each other and needed help, themselves.

"I'm glad nobody got seriously hurt," said Michael Tupper, Marshalltown Police Chief. "I'm glad that everybody's OK."

The two officers went to the hospital. When you look at their cars, you can see why.

The front end of this car, the back end of another -- which also has damage to its front end. A squad car also hit a third vehicle, which did not belong to police.

The officers' injuries are minor, and they're already back home.

The police chief calls this a "freak incident," and some people from the area say they can understand how officers could get in a crash at that specific intersection -- 3rd Avenue and State Street.

"That intersection is tough to see around and if you want to get around that corner, that building is right on top of the road," said Kevin Angstman, who works in Marshalltown. "I'm not surprised at all."

This all happened about 15 hours after two officers were involved in a shooting which killed a Marshalltown man -- something which isn't going unnoticed by people in town or police.

"They're doing their job," said Angstman. "They have a tough job to do. They're dealing with the 1 percent of the population that usually has to be dealt with."

"I think people sometimes forget that police officers are human, just like everybody else," said Tupper. "When tragedy strikes, it impacts us just like it does everybody else."

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, and Iowa State Patrol is investigating the car crash. That's to make sure these investigations remain unbiased.

Marshalltown police will also do an internal investigation of the crash to see if the officers broke any department policies -- and say they'll use those results to help prevent this from happening again.
