DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Dubuque police say they're receiving numerous reports of a phone scam involving callers pretending to be representatives of government agencies, primarily the IRS.

Police say the call recipient is told they have an outstanding fee or debt that needs to be taken care of immediately.

Recipients are told if the discrepancy is not taken care of they will consequently receive either court litigation, loss of government benefits, or even be arrested.

Police say the caller tells the recipient to pay by debit (including pre-paid) or credit card.

Officials encourage those who have received calls of this nature to report the scam to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration.

The TIGTA can be reached at www.treasury.gov/tigta or at 1-800-366-4484.
