Town hall addresses issues for black community

Posted: Updated:

Leaders came together Wednesday night for a town hall meeting on issues affecting the black community.

Sponsored by the Waterloo Citizens for Justice, many shared their experiences and aired grievances.

Some were there to speak out about recent acts of gun violence. Among them was Yoshida Thomas, of Waterloo. She said her teenage daughter's truck was shot up last year. Her daughter wasn't hurt, but she's worried she could have become collateral damage.

Thomas said even though the shooters weren't targeting her a daughter, but the violence needs to stop.

“Because there are so many innocent lives being lost because they're not actually shooting at the people they're trying to shoot,” Thomas said. “A bullet doesn't have a name on it.I just feel like the people they're intending to shoot – somebody innocent's always dying from it.”

Thomas said she'd like to see more young people at future meetings.
