Watch live Jan. 1: UNI marching band heads to London
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
In a little more than a week, the UNI marching band will take their talents overseas.
Two hundred and twenty Panthers were selected to play in London's New Year's Day parade.
"When I heard I was going to London, I immediately got really excited because I've never been out of the country, and its a place I've really wanted to go to," says junior Kyle Marlin. "To be able to do so with all of my friends and play music while I'm there...it's absolutely amazing."
It may be finals week at University of Northern Iowa, but the Panther marching band isn't sweating it.
"It's really actually taken a load off, because you get to see your friends during finals week," says junior Sierra Eckman.
Students say the excitement of the impending trip trumps everything else.
Many students haven't been out of the country before -- let alone played on an international level.
But the best part?
"To spend New Years with the PMB -- we're kind of a big family, (so) to spend that time together with my best friends will be great," says senior Victoria Chargo.
The Panthers will join other bands from around the country to march from Westminster to Parliament Square.
They'll end their march in front of the London icon Big Ben with one final performance,
Students will leave for London the Sunday after Christmas.
The band director says this is the first time the band has made a trip this far.
