IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  The Iowa City Council has approved funding for a temporary homeless shelter in a former grocery store building.
Our coverage partners at the Iowa City Press-Citizen report council members voted Tuesday to spend up to $20,000 on the project that will be housed in a former Aldi's building.
The executive director of an area homeless organization says the goal of the project is to keep people in Iowa City from freezing to death. She says the short-term housing solution will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. nightly in January and February.
The temporary shelter won't offer support services. The director says the temporary lodging will be open to individuals who are turned away from other shelters.
