The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is named the state's only Ebola treatment center.

While there are currently no reported cases of Ebola infections in Iowa, UIHC has been chosen as the medical center to care for any Ebola case to arise. The hospital was chosen because of the infectious disease specialists in the UIHC's Program of Hospital Epidemiology.

UIHC began preparing to care for Ebola patients in mid-August.

“I am very proud of how hard our response team has worked over many months for extremely long hours to prepare for any potential patient who might be infected with the Ebola virus,” said Loreen Herwaldt, MD, director of the Program of Hospital Epidemiology at UI Hospitals and Clinics. “They have done a tremendous job of getting us ready to meet this challenge.”

UIHC has a dedicated area that is isolated from the rest of the hospital – including it's air supply. The hospital says staff caring for a patient with an Ebola infection will not care for other patients.
