WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Hy-Vee gave back to the Cedar Valley after a Facebook promotion.

The the grocery store chain donated 17,044 nonperishable food items to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. That's one item for every "share" on Facebook.

"I noticed that a lot of the post that people across the country were sharing it who had a connection back to the Cedar Valley which was really fun," Northeast Iowa Food Bank Barbara Prather said.

A similar promotion last year only reached 4,479 shares.
