WATERLOO (KWWL) - It was a packed day at post offices across the country Monday.

Nationwide, employees of the U.S. Postal Service across the country will process nearly 640 million cards, letters, and packages that day.

Waterloo postmaster Bill Stephenson says it's important to get in your holiday packages.

He says, from here on out, you should probably send priority or first class to ensure delivery before Christmas.

Stephenson said the increase in packages can be chalked up to an increase to online shopping, but also the Postal Service's partnership with FedEx and UPS for final destination delivery.

"It's certainly our season," said Stephenson. "I think we proved last year that we can handle this season better than anyone else, and we're going to do that again this year."

Stephenson says they are up 16 percent from last year in package delivery.

To help with all the holiday packages, the post office hired extra workers. They have also already started delivering on Sundays and will continue that through Christmas.
