Latvia propels former Fighting Saint to All-Star voting lead

Posted: Updated:

Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons isn't a household name in the United States. The former Dubuque Fighting Saint, however, currently leads the NHL All-Star Game fan vote. In fact, as of Tuesday, Girgensons' vote total more than doubled any other player despite the fact his 9 goals this season ranks 50th in the league.

His boost is coming from overseas. Girgensons is the only Latvian born player in the National Hockey League. That's a source of pride in a country that provided 82% of the 400,000 votes he tallied in one week's time according to the last measurement. His total of 803,805 votes as of Tuesday dwarfs that of Patrick Kane, the Chicago Black Hawks winger who has a Conn Smythe trophy as MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to his name. Kane sits in a distant second place with 375,758 votes.

Girgensons was drafted by Buffalo in 2012. His 9 goals currently leads all Sabres players.

The 2015 All-Star Game will be played January 25th in Columbus, Ohio.
