Keokuk County man injured while checking possum trap

KEOKUK COUNTY (KWWL) -

A Keokuk County man was injured while checking possum traps Saturday morning.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 70-year-old James Conger of Ollie was injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while checking traps in Keokuk County.

They say conger leaned over to remove a possum from a live trap when the handgun he was carrying in a coat pocket fired into his leg.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. Saturday northwest of Ollie.

Conger was taken to a Ottumwa hospital for treatment.
