Warm winter weather brought golfers to the course

Posted: Updated:

Unseasonably warm weather Saturday had many eastern Iowans spending more time outdoors.

A lot of golfers are hitting the links this weekend while temperatures hit the mid and upper 40's.

"Very unusual for us to be open at this time of the year, but we're happy about it," said Tom Hein, PGA Professional at Pleasant Valley Golf Course. "Today's been really busy, it's a great day."

The clubs and carts were out at Pleasant Valley as the warm mid-December weather, brought golfers to get in their last few rounds for the season.

"I've been doing it for around 30 years," said Auggie Rodriguez. "Saves me a lot of money because I can play golf up here.

With less than two weeks before Christmas, many golfers were calling to schedule tee times.

"A lot of enthusiastic golfers. Greens keepers would put the the course away for the winter time, and they're do something that will not allow them to open up if the weather gets good," said Hein.

He says that's probably why Pleasant Valley is one of the few golf course open for the weekend.

Their green keepers only use a special chemical on the green so on warmer winter days, they're able to still open for golfers.

For many of the golfers , Christmas came a little early bit early this year.

"Great day and I think people should play golf anytime they can," said Peak.

Hein says this weekend might be the last chance for golfers to hit the links for the season, but living in eastern Iowa, you never know.

"Most of the courses are closed you can come here and play golf this time of year, most of the courses are closed and you have to go clear south of hear near Hannibal Missouri to play other than here," said Peak. "This time of year we're very lucky to play here."
