SeaWorld CEO resigns after "Blackfish" backlash

Posted: Updated:

SeaWorld's CEO James Atchinson is resigning from the company. Atchinson's been with SeaWorld since 2009, and his resignation is effective January 15th.

The theme park's attendance has gone down since the documentary "Blackfish" aired; the critically-acclaimed documentary scrutinized the company, showing a history of whales attacking some and even killing one of the theme parks trainers.

The film suggested that the company treated their killer whales poorly before the animals attacked.

SeaWorld stock has also plunged more than 50% since the company first began trading in April of last year.

Atchinson is leaving with a lump-sum payment of roughly $2.5 million as well as $8 million in stock options, while SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. says they'll be eliminating jobs in an effort to cut costs.
