Iowa native up for a Golden Globe

WINTHROP (KWWL) - We've seen her on the big screen, and now Michelle Monaghan has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a series, for her role in the HBO hit, True Detective, for the 2015 Golden Globes.

Monaghan grew up in Winthrop, and graduated from East Buchanan High School. Cheryl Beatty is now the librarian at East Buchanan, but years ago, was Monaghan's drama teacher.

"I could give Michelle a script and within days she could become that person. She was versatile, always willing to put herself out there," Beatty said.

The high school's library is filled with pieces of Monaghan's legacy. Yearbooks house her pictures from plays and student council, a library card signed by Monaghan hangs on the wall and an autographed poster is on display.

With the nomination, Beatty said she's thrilled for the star.

"I am so proud of her, it's one of those perfect examples where sometimes, kids from small schools really do get amazing opportunity, and she's an example of that."

School counselors said the news goes to show even small towns can breed big dreams, and hope Monaghan continues to act as a role model for students.
