Waterloo family grieves the loss of home, husband

Posted: Updated:

Police say John Derifield set fire to a home on Cornwall Street in Waterloo before taking his life.

Derifield was married to the homeowner, Jody Goldsberry, who wasn't home.

Jody Goldsberry didn't feel up to speaking with KWWL, but her father met us at the home.

He says its hard for the family to wrap their brain around what happened 9th, and there are still are so many unanswered questions.

"I was sitting in the doctors office with the blood pressure thing around my arm. When the phone rang and I looked, and it was my daughter saying 'my house is on fire'.... well I hope they didn't look at my blood pressure because it probably went very high."

Roger Goldsberry was in the doctors office when he heard what happened.

He says his daughter and her husband had issues, but he thought they were resolved.

Roger's grand-kids lived in the home with their mom.

"The children say 'I miss'...and of course you do."

Everyday routines are now shaken...like the sound machine the kids used to help them fall asleep.

"Before they went to bed you know, 'where's my sound machine?' just thinking it was in the other room."

The kids and their mom are currently staying with family.

They're planning to rebuild, but still, they need help.

"It's the holiday season and the kids need uniforms, and clothes, and toothpaste and a toothbrush......and a sound machine to help them sleep."

Roger set up a fund Veridian for his daughter.

Donations can be made by cash or check to the Goldsberry-Stephens fire fund.
