Longtime Iowa football fan ready for 2015 Taxslayer Bowl

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Iowa's football team is headed to Jacksonville, Florida, for the 2015 Taxslayer Bowl game.

The University of Iowa accepted the invitation to play Tennessee and this will be the Hawkeyes' second appearance in the bowl, formerly known as the Gator Bowl.

"Every bowl game's a good game," said John Loughran, a long-time Hawkeye football fan.

Loughran's lived in Iowa City since 1945 and has been a die-hard Hawkeye fan since the early 60's.

"So I've went to plenty of Hawkeye games as a fan, as a student as an alumnus," said Loughran. "Gator Bowl in Jacksonville was so cold one year."

That game was the one back in 1983, Iowa's first Gator Bowl.

Attendance that year was 81,293, ranking as one of the highest attendances in the bowl's history.

Loughran is expecting the Hawks take the win in the 2015 Taxslayer Bowl and is hoping the weather doesn't remind him of Iowa's weather, like it did in '83.

"It's unusual, I don't think that'll be the case this year -- at least I hope it's not," said Loughran.

Even Loughran admits Iowa hasn't played up to fans' expectations.

He says the past few seasons has been a roller coaster, and mentions it's not easy getting to the bowl games played by the Big 10.

Even workers at Winebrenner Red Carpet Travel has seen a lack in travel sales, according to general manager Terry Tegen.

"Not as good as last year, when we had to big wins at the end of the season and went to the Outback Bowl," Tegen said.

However, Tegen says there are fans just like Loughran that support the Hawks year after year.

"Another opportunity to see your Hawkeyes," said Loughran. "You don't have to wait until August to see them again."

Iowa has made 27 bowl game appearances and they've won 14 of them.

Their first bowl game was in 1957.
